never judge a book by its cover

So I have a secret.

I'm really bad about judging a book by its cover.
I've always been one of those girls in a book store
who may pass by a fantastic read simply because I
liked the jacket on the near by novel instead.
Sure, one cover may not look pleasing to my eyes
but I'm sure I'm missing out on a great story within.
However, I can't help it. I'm a very visual
person so I tend to go with the most noticeable,
colorful, dramatic, or whatever my mood may be in,
cover of the moment. I've tried to overcome this
but it's really hard. If I am going to be reading
the same book for possibly more than a day
{if it's really good it will be devoured in a day}
it has got to look pretty, right? I like to think so.
I have another secret.
I used to read the very end page of a book
before I bought it. I refused to buy it if the girl
didn't end up with the guy or if  the story ended sour.
I don't know how I ever could have done that.
I mean, what was I thinking?!
I refused to believe
that fairy tales sometimes don't
work out, that's it. Well it's a harsh reality.
If the characters aren't meant
to be together, well, I guess it was never
really a fairytale now was it?
You don't always need romance in your life
to discover life - there are other adventures too.
I'm happy to say I've changed my ways some what.
I no longer read the end of a book before I buy it.
Thank goodness.
I've also tried to be better about not passing
up the covers that may look horrid, but inside
their might just be a magical story that wants
to emerge. A surpassing story that will sweep
me off of my feet. We'll see.
I've also changed my ways about having
the main characters, if it's a romance that is,
ending up together. In fact, call me a cynic
sometimes, but I actually like it often when
they don't. Why you may ask? Well, I once
had my heart shattered into a thousand pieces and I
knew if that never would have taken place, then I
wouldn't have discovered the Sierra I am today.
And seriously I like this person so much better than
the girl that I was when I was with this ex.
I like novels of substance. I love autobiographies
and memoirs. Reading about a real life story
inspires me. I learn so much about other people's
triumphs and mistakes. Chick lit is another one of my
favorites, as long as it has just the right amount of comedy.
I'm also drawn to historical fiction and modern novels
set in New York or Ireland, traveling is always fun too.
More than anything I like a story I can remember,
a story that makes an impact, and a story
that makes its way into my heart and doesn't
let go...I've read so many books that imprint
themselves on my heart.
When I have to say goodbye
to the characters in my book it's
most often like saying goodbye
to a best friend. I get that attached to my
stories sometimes. I'm very sad to
see a great story end.
Throughout this post I've intertwined
books I would like to read.
I have this habit of taking pictures
of books that look appealing to me in a bookstore.
Have you ever taken random pictures in a book store?
I feel a bit odd doing it, but lately I've been
falling more and more in love with my camera
so I find myself wanting to take pictures of just
about everything - especially an inspiring read.

So tell me.
Have you read any of the books that I've
posted pictures of?
I want to know if you judge a book by its cover.
Am I the only one that does this??
Lastly, what are some books you want to read?
I recently signed up on goodreads
thanks to the lovely Gracie.
It's a great way to keep track of the
books I've read and plan to read.
Plus it's another social networking site -
right, like we don't have enough already?!
But I love it. I always get sucked in.
You can read about all of the books I'm
posting on my profile here.
Oh and about the multiple jackets and
covers for Jane Eyre -
every time I see a different one {like this on}
I want to buy it just for its cover.
So much for not judging a book by its cover!!
{back cover of Jane Eyre}

So back to my questions -
1. Have you read any of the books that I've
posted pictures of above?

2. I want to know if you judge a book by its cover.
Am I the only one that does this??

3. Lastly, what are some books you want to read???
I always need new books to read.
Like I already don't have enough in this post
already. ;)

Have a lovely day!

XOXO,

  2. The only one I've read is "Jane Eyre," and I loved it!

I tend to pick out books I want to read before hitting the bookstore -- through reviews or recommendations -- but if it has a nice cover, it will definitely intrigue me more. I may also pick up an extra book if the cover grabbed my attention and the summary kept it.

We're friends on Goodreads! Feel free to check out my "shelves" for recommendations. I try to be consistent about reviewing what I have read, or at least rating it.

  3. Oh, Sierra I love this post! (and I'm so glad you became the Sierra you are today)!!

I could stand in front of a book display for hours and not get bored...same with greeting cards.

I LOVE book covers! I love the art and the creativity. I can remember as far back as the age of three, standing in front of a book display, handling the books one by one...refusing to walk away when my mom said "let's go"! The covers were inticing!

I don't read much fiction, but loved "The Shack". I like books about life and the heart which draw me closer to God. I am a huge fan of John and Stasi Eldredge..."the Sacred Romance"; "Waking the Dead"; "Desire"; and probably every book they have written!
Too long here?! Sorry I love a good book and a good book cover!
    :) xoxo

  4. I sooo judge a book by its cover and I often pass up ones that people have requested me to read because the cover is unappealing. I have to get on Goodreads to find reviews and purchase that way. I have been making horrible choices lately! Good post!

  7. I haven't read any of the books you posted but some of them look intriguing! I do sometimes judge a book by its cover... like if there's a cheesy couple making out on the front lol ;-) I am SO bad about reading the last page of books. I actually just did that with the 3rd Hunger Games book and I am SO mad at myself for doing it now! Of course I'll still read it but dang, I wish I could've been patient enough to wait. The next book on my list is called "Room." I got it for Christmas and am eager to read it. I'm on bookreads too so I'll find ya when I have a chance. xoxo!

  9. I'm a huge reader. And I'm guilty of reading the last page of a book before I buy it as well.

  10. I read the first book Nicole Richie came out with, definitely curious about Priceless. And I agree, I admit sometimes I judge a book by its cover too lol.

  11. I used to read the end of a book before I would buy it, too! I haven't read any of the books you posted pictures of! I've been reading a lot off of my Kindle lately...and I have definitely expanded my horizon of book choices! lol

  13. HEY, HEY, HEY!!! How are you? Hope you are doing well! Sorry I have been so incredibly MIA, I have now posted why on the blog... You'll have to come over and take a look! ;-)

I completely judge a book by it's cover...and speaking of books, I actually went out and bought (and surprisingly read, lol) Cleo per your recommendation! Great book, great story. I couldn't resist a cover with an adorable black kitten, since I am the closeted cat lady. lol Thank you for that!

Well, I'm hopefully I will get caught up with all that has been going on in Ocean Dream's world! Hope you are well!

  14. I like to go by recommendations for my books. I read the back of the jacket to see if it sounds intriguing, and then I usually get it after that. So, I don't necesarily pick it based on the pretty cover. More or less, I pick it based on what others say. :) Never read any of yours. I have to get back into reading.

  15. it seems like all the celebrity books aren't selling very well :P

I like reading self help books, even though it's a bit lame hehe :)

  16. I am the same way about books - I am drawn to covers and always read the last page:)

  17. I also sometimes tend to judge a book by its cover as well. Publishing houses know that because they put a lot of effort into covers. So don't feel too bad about it. ;)

Also, I normally read a book and if I'm not feeling it by 20 pages, I quit. It's just not worth my time (unless it's a "classic" novel that everyone says I should read).

And yeah, I freaking LOVE chick lit and biographies. Those are my favorite reads!

    Great post! xoxo

  19. Ah Dr. Zhivago! I didnt know there was a book, but the movie is quite, quite lovely. and also, I do indeed judge a book at first glance. I think that is what is meant to happen. if there is a cover with a girl holding a gun or something violent, and I don't like violence, then I won't pick it up. Buuut...when I do pick other books up, I read the back cover, or the inside covers. then it goes from there :)

  22. I haven't read either of these books. But believe me you're not the only one judging a book by its cover. I never read the last page, but I still read the last sentence. Which often doesn't give a whole lot away, but I started doing it ages ago and now it's just a thing I do...x
