to save a life

Hi Ocean Dreamers! I'm back in Utah but only for a short while. My mom and I soon will be on a road trip to see some family members! I'm looking forward to it.

I've been praying and thinking of those of you who may have been affected by Irene. I hope that you are safe and that your area has a fast and speedy pick up and that flooding doesn't take place. I'm glad that the storm did not gain as much as momentum as they thought it would and is it just me or did the media blow this thing out of the water? No pun intended, lol.
This post today is going to be a little deep, but I think it is something that needs to be discussed. So last night I watched a film that really affected me in powerful ways. It was called To Save a Life, and was about a young man in High School and it focused on teen bullying, a hot and heavy topic that has been tackled more lately because of it resulting in teen suicides.
This is exactly what is covered in this film. Teen bullying, teen pregnancy, a friend committing suicide to get attention because he was lonely and made fun of, a new teen who is depressed and the main character has to make a choice about whether he desires to be-friend him and help him choose to live, wonderful relationships dynamics, and a few characters making a profession of faith (it's a Christian based film) and has a great message of kindness and hope for Christians and Non-Christians alike.
What I loved about this film is that it was raw and realistic. It wasn't afraid to cover some intense issues and that way the characters discuss what happens is very real and it doesn't sugar coat anything. I find films like this refreshing and touching.
So what can we do to make sure teen suicides don't happen? Well, if you are a sister or brother and you have younger siblings, be aware of your younger siblings' feelings and reactions, and be sure that you stay updated on what is happening to them at school. I think teens are good at hiding things so sometimes you need to really dig and make they really are okay.
Little acts of kindness can go a long way. Just smiling at someone tells them that you are giving them the time of day and sending them some happiness.
When I was in High School I often felt left out. I wasn't into partying and drinking like some of the other kids, and the result was I had a hard time making friends. I did make a few, but because I felt left out and sometimes alone, it really effected me. I also had one young man in particular bully me verbally, by ridiculing me for being a Christian. I came out of it stronger today (even though it hurt, even through my college years) and I have immense compassion for those who have gone through this hurt and pain.
Some teens take this to the next level of suicide because when you are young, having friends or just being noticed while your self esteem is developing, is everything. But imagine the lives that can be saved if teens are encouraged to accept others more and loving those who may not be their standard of "cool?" Teens need to realize that it is not all about being cool; there are many types of young adults from all parts of life. An adult who works with teens can also take more time to make sure someone who was bullied is really okay.
It's about caring. It's about compassion. It's about saving a life. I'm going to make a pledge to be more aware of the teens around me, and help the people who are suffering, hurting, and who are in pain before it's too late. Life is fragile and should not ever be taken for granted.

healing waves & ocean bliss

The ocean for me has always been my safe place.

My place to dwell.

A place where I soak up hope and whisper a prayer.

A place where God renews my strength.

A place where healing begins or ends.

I find freedom and peace.

I find joy and bliss.

I could truly stay there forever. Maybe someday I will...

There is nothing more magical for me than to walk hand in hand with BK on the sand, or get wet in the waves. Last week BK and I went beach hopping to several beaches: Manhattan Beach, Seal Beach, Huntington Beach, Surf Side, and Bulsa Chica.

I love how each beach has its own personality, with different sand, waves, people, and each place has a tale of its own to tell.

My story is about a girl who not only fell in love with the ocean, but she also feel in love with a man who loves the ocean. The waves in California are magical and they gently hold the ocean and the people she loves.

What kind of emotion does the beach evoke for you? Does it "heal" you?
P.S. Praying for those who may be effected by Hurricane Irene this weekend. May the waves not over power your homes and that you stay safe.

guest post by Erin - Unsinkable ocean dreams review

Happy Disneyland day Ocean Dreamers! Well, it is for me at least. Today I'm about to venture to the happiest place on earth and then I'll be headed back to UT all in the same day. I know - how can both of those activities coincide?! Well, I was determined to make it work because my pass is going to expire in about a week. So yeah, that's a close call, right?

So while I'm traveling a fabulous book blogger named Erin is going to entertain you with a book she recently read about a young woman's sailing journey on the seas and her review on it! The irony of it all is that I'm also reading a book about a different young woman's {Jessica Watson} attempt to sail around the world, but it's called True Spirit. I certainly admire these woman's strength and perseverance! So enjoy this post - it's all about ocean dreaming!

Unsinkable: A Young Woman’s Courageous Battle on the High Seas was written by Abby Sunderland, the young sailor herself, with additional narration from Lynn Vincent. Vincent is the journalist and U.S. Navy veteran who co-wrote Going Rogue: An American Life with Sarah Palin.
Abby Sunderland was 13 years old when she decided to sail around the world solo, and she was 16 when she actually set out to do so. Those who don’t know anything about Abby may think the idea is ridiculous - how could a 16-year-old girl possibly handle a feat like that? Thinking along those lines wouldn’t be anything unusual; people routinely underestimate the young, especially young women. Joan of Arc was a teenage girl when she led the French army, though. Every teen is different, and most young women care about issues much more pressing than mascara and boyfriends. Abby’s sailing campaign is one more reminder than the era of underestimating the young woman should be long over.

Abigail wasn’t raised in a typical household. She was a sailor from a very young age, when her father took a job as a harbor master. Abby, her older brother Zac (who solo circumnavigated the world when he was 16) and their six younger siblings are home-schooled, and their parents place a strong emphasis on experience learning. Based on voyages she’d been on with her father and brother, and what Zac learned from his solo campaign, Abby knew what she was getting into when she sailed her boat Wild Eyes from her home in Marina del Rey, California.
As Abby got ready to go on her campaign, she faced a lot of media scrutiny. Besides those who said she was too young, there were others who said her parents were pushing her into this for the publicity and the money. Some said her boat was the wrong kind for this campaign, that her equipment was inadequate, that her team didn’t know what they were doing or that it was the wrong time of the year for her to set off. Abby addresses all these criticisms in her own words.

She also talks about how her faith was deepened as a result of her voyage. She wasn’t raised in a particularly religious household, but she did learn that when Zac went on his solo campaign, he came back with a much closer relationship to the divine than he had ever had before. This was Abby’s experience as well. Some of the things she experienced, she feels, were miraculous.
Abby’s campaign, which ended with her being rescued from the middle of the Indian Ocean, was not an easy one. She had problems with several of the boat’s systems, including her engines. At one point, she thought she was going to have to climb the mast to untangle one of her sails, which is one of the most dangerous things a sailor can do on the open ocean. Another night, she woke up to find Wild Eyes had been flipped. She ended up losing her mast, and that was when she knew the voyage was over.

Abby is disappointed she didn’t make it all the way around the world by herself, but she isn’t brokenhearted. She did, after all, manage to travel more than 12,000 miles by herself, proving she is a capable sailor. Perhaps the most inspiring thing about Abby Sunderland is her attitude about the experience. She writes, “In stepping out and trying to achieve great things, the only way I can truly fail is never to try at all.” Abby’s spirit will be a great inspiration to anyone, young or old, who believes in the power to do great things.

Man Candy Monday: Tyler Blackburn

So I've been wanting to link up to Leeann's Man Candy Monday for forever, but I really wanted to find a yummy man, you know? Besides BK of course, lol.
So as you already from my last post know I'm a bit obsessed with Pretty Little Liars and since my man Caleb is taking a break from a few eppies (will not spoil why) I thought I would feed my withdrawals by posting some yummy pictures of him. After all, he's just, well, nice on the eyes.

Confession: I used to date an Asian guy (not sure what Tyler's ethnicity is) and always have had a thing for scruffy guys with long hair. Funny how you always end up with someone as the polar opposite (my BK is preppy and clean shaven even though I beg him to never shave and only occasionally do I get my wish.) I'm obviously still head over heels in love with my BK!

So back to Tyler and some facts about him:

*He's 25 and is actually from Burbank, CA.

*He plays Caleb in Pretty Little Liars and is head over heels in love with Hanna (played by Ashley Benson.)

*He's got the deepest beautiful and intense eyes! (Okay that is more my fact, lol.)

*Now he's going to be in a six episode webseries called Wendy as one of the main characters named Peter. He also sings (steal my heart!) on this webseries.

*Wendy the webseries begins on September 15th and do you know it's a spin off from Peter and Wendy in Peter Pan? Sounds intriguing. Find out more info on their Facebook page.

So now it's time for some pictures!!
Supposedly Tyler is dating the gal who plays Jenna in Pretty Little Liars. I'm not a fan of her role in the show!
Tyler took a stand against digital drama (cyber bullying) in this ad.

So what do you think of Tyler Blackburn? Have you seen him on Pretty Little Liars? I want more of Tyler please! ;)

little joys from the week

Hi Ocean Dreamers!

Well I made it to CA and I've been enjoying spending time with BK! I've been feeling a little bit blue lately just because it's hard going back and forth from UT to CA. I'm anxious to be settled somewhere permanently and that's why I hope to be back in CA very soon. It's hard to "start a life" when you are constantly so back and forth. I miss spending time with friends and being more involved in a church, organizations, etc.

So I decided to do a little joys from the week post to cheer me up. After all, once I start talking about my joys I am thankful and refreshed.

1. I've been reading a fabulous book called Heaven is for Real. It's about a 4 year old boy who almost dies because his appendix are ruptured. While he's in surgery he goes to heaven, has a chat with loved ones, Jesus, and views the marvelous heavens. I'm a Christian, which I've expressed on my blog before, so this book just makes me so excited to go to heaven someday!
2. Yesterday BK and I went to the beach and it was such a gorgeous day outside! I'm so happy that I'm near the beach again, even if it's only for a short while.
I got my toes painted turquoise for Cali! ;) Ha ha it made me happy.

4. Whenever I'm in CA I have to head on over to Trader Joes and get my veggie sticks stat! They are sooo good and so much better for me than chips.
5. I'm headed to Disneyland with this lady on Tuesday if all works out. My pass expires at the end of this month so I have to use it one last time!
6. I'm really loving Pretty Little Liars right now and the plots! SPOILER - I also really want Caleb to come back. I am a huge Haleb fan (aka Hanna and Caleb.) I had a feeling Caleb (aka Tyler Blackburn) went missing because he's starring on a web series called Wendy by Macy's. However, according to his Facebook he's in both series so that means he'll hopefully be back soon in PPL! He is so good lookin'!
He has the most intense eyes. Sigh.
If you want more of Tyler I'm going to be a part of Leeann's Man Candy Monday series for the first time!

So that's it for my little joys of the week this week! :) I hope you all have an amazing weekend. I can't wait to spend more time with my BK and see some lovely friends.

guest post by Ashely - engagement ring styles for girls on the go

Hi Ocean Dreamers! I'm on my way to sunny CA today so my friend Ashley is doing another fabulous guest post! This time it's about engagement rings and she really is making me want to be engaged! Come on BK, just pop the question already, lol.
It’s wedding season and Chicago is buzzing with happy couples tying the knot. I know that not everyone is hooked on weddings like I am, but you can’t help but get caught up in the romance!

But I have to admit all the details: the reception, the wedding party’s attire and the engagement rings just get a fashion girl like myself reeling.

I think it’s extremely important for a wedding to reflect the couple. Wedding traditions are being revamped and redefined all the time!
Even though I’ve been to quite a few, each one is different. Most of my friends are young and not going to be married in the near future. However, more and more of them are getting engaged, and having a long engagement just means you have more time to plan your special day.

Lately, many of my friends with active lifestyles have been asking me, “What are some great engagement ring styles for girls on the go?” Below are some tips I’ve compiled for my fitness, sport and adventurous ladies. You can also apply some of these tips to jewelry in general if you live a jet setting, active lifestyle but haven’t met Prince Charming yet.

Tough Stuff

Part of the value of an engagement ring is that it’s made of precious materials. This is supposed to symbolize the preciousness of the bond itself. Unfortunately, some couples get too caught up in this idea and think that a more valuable ring equals a more valuable bond, which simply isn’t true. Additionally, more valuable materials are not always more durable.

Keep in mind you’ll wear the ring every day and it needs to be durable. Many engagement rings are made of some type of gold. Whether white, yellow or rose, gold is a lovely choice but it’s a soft metal. If an active girl has a 24K gold ring, the daily knocking around that it experiences may show faster than its 14k equivalent. A ring with less gold or a completely different metal like platinum or steel (very contemporary) may be a better fit.

Size Matters

A big stone can be nice, but it isn’t necessary. Really large diamonds are out of most people’s price ranges and they can be too flashy for some. If you lead a very “hands on” life then banging your ring around and getting it snagged is the last thing you want.

Look for a smaller stone, or maybe several stones instead of one big one. A lower setting could also help keep your prized stone close to your finger and out of harm.
Safety First

Insure your ring, especially if you are the type that takes it on and off frequently. No one ever thinks they will lose or damage their ring, but these things happen (my mother’s fell into the garbage disposal). Buying insurance for your ring either through the jeweler or an independent insurance agency is a very wise more.

Keeping your ring clean is also a must. You don’t have to clean it too often; every 4- 6 months should be fine. Check with your jeweler on the proper way to clean your ring.

Anastasia of Beverly Hills - delicious beauty products

Hello and happy Tuesday! Soon I'll be headed to CA so Tuesday is just fine with me! ;) But today I'm going to be super busy packing away, that is for sure! I hope the beginning of your week is going well!

So I'd like to introduce a new sponsor to you. Their name is Anastasia of Beverly Hills and Anastasia, the creative mind behind all of this beauty, has some amazing beauty products available.

"Anastasia has long been the definitive eye and brow expert for icons such as Madonna, Jennifer Lopez, Oprah as well as hip up-and-comers like Diana Agron, Selena Gomez and Kristen Cavalari and has recently expanded into colors that match their superior standards for skincare based cosmetics." - from Anastasia

As mentioned above, this company has recently expanded their makeup line and I'm especially infatuated with their lip gloss. Their bronzer also looks amazing {see above} - I'm always a sucker for bronze colored cheeks. I also love everything that has to do with helping eyebrows and believe me, with my thick eyebrows, I'm excited to try their products in the future. Check out this video for a tutorial.

"Beauty Express" brow-kit instructional video from Anastasia Beverly Hills on Vimeo.

Also, here are some fantastic pictures of what Anastasia has to offer on some celebrities that I adore! Plus, I just realized they are all blonde. Not that I don't like brunette hair, but I just so happen to be a blonde so I can't help but love the lighter locks. ;)
So as you can see I'm currently desiring many of their beauty products and I have some exciting news! Stay tuned because I will be hosting a giveaway for this amazing company! I just love learning about new companies and their lovely beauty products. Anastasia of Beverly Hills is no exception. Might I just add that I love Beverly Hills?! This makes me miss California all the more and I'm so glad that I'll be there soon!

As a reminder: This is a sponsored post, but all opinions are my own.

I'll be traveling on Wednesday so there will be a lovely guest post to entertain you. However, I'll be back to post later this week. Welcome new readers and thanks so much for your comments on my Fantasy Birthday Wish List post! xoxo!
