Playing It Safe: Avoiding Safety Hazards While Making Your Home Holiday-Ready

For many people, digging the holiday décor out of storage and making your home a beautiful holiday sanctuary is one of the best ways to get into the holiday spirit. Few things are more satisfying than carrying on family traditions that your mother and grandmother taught you, yet many of those traditions may pose some safety risks. Here’s how to identify potential risks when making your home holiday-ready and choosing safer alternatives without sacrificing tradition.

Avoiding Fire Risks with Live Trees

For many families, going out and exploring a tree farm and carefully selecting the perfect tree to decorate your home for the holidays is an annual tradition. Real trees are beautiful and add a fresh pine scent to your home, but they also come with some safety concerns – particularly, the risk of catching fire. When placing your tree, make sure it’s at least three feet away from any heat source such as candles, fireplaces, heat vents, radiators, and any other source of heat.

A moist tree is far less likely to catch fire, so the key is to water your tree daily. Keep an eye on live trees throughout the season, checking the needles for brittleness. If needles snap and break off easily, that’s a sign that your tree is drying out and needs more water. If you enlist the services of a housekeeper, make sure they know this is something you’d like them to keep an eye on.

Choose Safe Options for Decorating the Tree

Many years ago, it was a tradition for some families to place lit candles on the Christmas tree, a serious safety risk for obvious reasons. Avoid using real flames near the holiday tree, particularly if you are using a real tree that has had time to dry out.

Even regular lights can be a safety hazard on the tree, so read the packaging carefully and be sure to use lights that are rated for use on Christmas trees. Never use lights that have frayed or damaged wires on or near the tree. Finally, if you have pets who are intrigued by shiny objects, choose shatterproof bulbs and ornaments to avoid a mess (and possibly a cut foot). Shattered ornaments tend to break into hundreds of sharp, tiny shards that are difficult to clean up.

Stay Safe Decorating on the Roof

Going all-out for your outdoor décor can result in a beautiful holiday masterpiece, but getting all those lights and other décor properly affixed near the top of your home is a treacherous feat. Use caution when climbing ladders, and choose a non-metal ladder. Metal conducts electricity, which can spell disaster if your wiring goes awry.

If you can avoid it, don’t climb onto the roof in snowy and icy conditions. Slipping and falling off the roof can result in serious injury, and you don’t want to spend the holidays in the hospital.

Choose Safe and Eco-Friendly Options for Outdoor Décor

Slips and falls from the rooftop aren’t the only risk associated with decorating outdoors. You should also clean out your gutters before stringing up lights around the roof to avoid fires, and always choose lights that are rated for outdoor use.

If you want to save a few bucks this year, opt for LED lighting to reduce your energy consumption. LEDs consume up to 75 percent less energy and last up to 25 times longer than traditional lighting options.

Plan Parties with Safety and Functionality in Mind

Throwing a holiday party? There are safety options to consider when planning get-togethers during the holiday season, too. Do any of your guests have allergies or other dietary restrictions? Be sure to ask all invitees before you’re ready to prepare or order food and beverages for the event.
Make sure to have a clear path to and around the food and beverage area, as this is where party-goers tend to gravitate. If you’re facing inclement weather, have a coat rack placed near the entrance. Too much clutter can lead to accidents as the evening wears on, particularly if any of your guests have over-indulged.

The holidays are a joyful time of year filled with many traditions that have been passed down through generations. Whether you’re decorating a real Christmas tree, decking out the exterior of your home, or planning the party event of the year, these safety tips will help you keep tradition without jeopardizing safety.

5 Top Fall Fashion Trends

Seasons come ago and along with them, so do fashion trends. As the weather begins to get colder, it’s time to reorganize our closets and bid adieu to the trends of summer and spring. Read on to discover the top five fashion trends of 2016.

Velvet

Once considered the fabric faux-pauxs are made of, velvet is making a big comeback this fall season. As a dense and heavy fabric, velvet is ideal for cooler weather with multiple style delivery systems.

If you feel like going all-out on this velvet trend, the bomber jacket is a perfect canvas. Mostly worn in a masculine type outfit with pants, the velvet bomber will instantly feminize any outfit with a retro vibe. Accessorize it as you would any bomber jacket, with patches and pins that show off your personality. You can also take a note from glam rockers like Patti Smith and David Bowie, who took velvet platform boots to center stage. For a reminiscent 90’s velvet look á la J-Lo, the jumpsuit is a tried and true party favorite.

Capelets

A coat and accessory rolled into one, capelets are the best of both worlds. A truly versatile piece, capelets can be worn over a blouse, t-shirt, or dress. They’re ideal for fall weather when it’s too cool for no sleeves and too warm for a full-blown coat. Best of all, there’s no universal style for capelets, as they come in any fabric and color.

For a girl-next-door look, opt for a knitted capelet with a homemade bow fastener. For a country look, choose a lace or plaid capelet with rustic buttons. You can also dress capelets up, by wearing them in chic black with highly polished fasteners. Just add a pair of boots and voilà—you’re the trendiest girl in sight!

Puffer Jackets

Typically worn on snow-capped mountaintops, puffer jackets were nowhere to be seen in weather conditions above 60 degrees. Now, colder weather lends itself to trendy fashion with an apres-ski inspired chic look, puffer jackets are hot once again.

A puffy jacket and symbol of wealth rolled into one, it’s no surprise that puffers are pairing with more elegant clothing. One major trend in Fall 2016 fashion is topping the puffer over evening dresses and more polished looks. This creates a pleasing juxtaposition that merges the high and low fashion realms. If you’d like to copy this look, choose a puffer that is in a solid dark tone. Pair it with an outfit or dress in a dark hue, as well.

Pinstripes

Reminiscent of men’s business suits and smoking lounges, pinstripes emulate an aura of power and class. Once an exclusive style for conservative business dress, pinstripes are dominating the runways and streets in 2016.

Although there are multiple ways to wear the pinstripe pattern, a foolproof classic outfit is a jumpsuit or pants. For events where you need to look professional yet want to show off a little bit of style, pinstripes are a great way to leave a lasting impression. Pair them with darker colors like navy and black, and add a pair of black pumps. Top off your look with a matte red lipstick and minimal makeup to perfect the look.

Gloves

Although not much of a surprise, gloves are going to be a hit this fall season. Except these aren’t your grandmother’s gloves. Designers are combining multiple fabric trends to create the ultimate outfit finisher. The most prominent glove trend is an embellished or floral glove. Topped off with multiple 3D designs, these gloves are formal and cute. Worn with either a sleeveless or short sleeve top, these gloves will be the center of attention at any party.

Whether you want to go for the classic driving gloves, or wish to successfully pull off an Amal Clooney moment, gloves are a cute way to stay warm this fall season.

How to Have a Powerful Presence in the Fashion World

The fashion industry is flooded with talented, young hopefuls, all vying to be at the top of the fashion game. Everyone wants to be recognized and considered the next big influence on trends and styles. Check out the tips below to stand out from the sea of other budding fashionistas and establish a powerful presence in the world of fashion.

Figure Out Your Style

Knowing who you are and what you’re all about is key in the fashion world. Your perspective influences every single design you create and each decision you make. You need to be able to communicate your personality with your style alone.

Layering basics are essential pieces in this endeavor, as you can create a variety of unique outfits with just a few simple pieces. Ensure that your wardrobe has enough neutral tops and bottoms—as well as several statement pieces to mix and match—for show-stopping ensembles that reflect the essence of who you are.

While many people don’t consider makeup to be a fundamental part of fashion, applying the right amount appropriately is crucial to conveying a personal sense of style. Choosing the makeup and highlighting your most attractive facial features is an important part of your stylistic development.

Break the Rules

Once you’ve decided on your style, it’s time to break the rules. There are so many unspoken regulations about fashion—including a ban on crop tops at work, disdain for crayon-colored hair, and condescending judgment for fringe on the dance floor—but breaking the rules is a part of developing your sense of self and making an in the fashion industry.

Added benefits to flaunting the rules of fashion include exhibiting your self-confidence and cheeky sense of humor. Don’t let the fashion world put you in a box. Instead, break free with personal modifications to established trends.

Pay Attention to Grooming

While 90's grunge is still a source of inspiration for many, choosing an unkempt style doesn’t mean you should relinquish your grooming standards. No matter your stylistic choices, you should always ensure that your hair and nails are healthy and clean.

Proper grooming includes preparing for fashion emergencies like broken heels, spilled coffee, and ripped pants. While carrying around a small sewing kit and a bleach pen is always advisable, having an extra pair of shoes or an alternate outfit in your car or office can save your day and make you look effortless stylish to coworkers and bosses.

Quality vs Quantity

Successful women are wise when it comes to spending money on clothes and accessories. Sometimes, one piece of high-quality jewelry or a small set of boutique tank tops is better than spending the same amount of money on accessories and clothing that looks cheap and wears out easily.

Make a Powerful Impression

Adding all of these standards into your daily routine will ensure that you look amazing. Express yourself and make the right impression on those you hope to inspire and collaborate with. Discover the changes these simple tips will make in your fashion life and embrace your powerful presence!

The Irony of Wildlife and Nature with Kids an Captivity

Living in the Sierras has so many beautiful and wonderful rewards, but it does come with some risks associated with possible encounters with some of its dangerous wildlife. While coming across a mountain lion can be terrifying in this mountainous terrain, even the presence of birds can be traumatic, depending on the circumstance.

Here’s an obvious nod to Tippi Hedren, the star of one of the most classic horror movies of all times during the days of the Silver Screen. While filming the Alfred Hitchcock classic “The Birds,” she was still an avid animal rights activist. Ironic, isn’t it?

But this begs an important question, when we’re living and traversing in these beautiful settings, is wildlife really problematic, who is the real intruder, the predator or the prey? Some of us recall some recent headlines when mixing nature and nurture, this is not only dangerous, but it can be deadly, especially for youngsters.

Dangerous Confines

In the recent past, there have been headlines of humans who have encountered wildlife that were killed or injured by mountain lions while they were jogging through the woods or bear attacks to unsuspecting campers, but what about animals attacking children? Even at the happiest place on earth, kids are vulnerable to wildlife threats when we remember a recent event at Disney World.

The tragic death of a child, who was dragged underwater by an alligator being kept in captivity at this amusement park reminds us that these animals are still a threat and shouldn’t necessarily be confined. The animal in this instance probably shouldn’t be held accountable, nor should their parents, but rather those who caged a wild animal and expected it to be tame in a public setting.

Outrage Or Innocence

On the other side of the world, headlines of another, somewhat similar event with a toddler in crocodile infested waters, also went viral and caused outrage and worldwide concern. A couple years previous to the Disney event, images of a baby in Australia, splashing and playing in waters known to be the playground of crocodiles, sent parents into a tizzy on a global level.

In the land down under, the parents of this little one immediately went on the defensive claiming some of the pictures were misleading. In one shot, it appears as if the toddler was left alone in the water, but it’s clear that the guardian taking the picture was only a few feet away at the time.

Background & Opinions

In the backdrop of this picture of the baby bathing alone, the depth of the water is recorded at just under a meter, which is said to be prime crocodile hunting grounds according to the locals. In another shot, a father figure is seen happily playing with the baby inside these shallow waters.

Luckily, nothing happened to the infant or anyone else in the area, but it does make one wonder how safe it is to have children in the great outdoors. If you compare these two instances, it would seem that the child in a public place was at a much bigger risk when compared to the infant in the water where there could have been wild animals present.

4 Things You Should Know About Antiques & Vintage Objects

Many people love the idea of antique and vintage home decor, yet they have no idea what it really means to own an older piece. Whether it’s furniture, art, and accessories, tableware, or lighting, there are a few things everyone needs to know about owning antique and vintage objects.

Antique vs. Vintage

While both vintage and antique denote an object that’s considered old, defining its period of origin hangs on the difference between the two descriptions.

When you visit an antiques shop, anything described as antique must be over 100 years old. There is some variability within the market and some consider 80 years old to be antique as well. Furthermore, while it’s acceptable to repair or restore an item, U.S. Customs insists that the item must maintain more than 50% of its originality to retain its status as antique.

In the antique's trade, most experts define vintage as an item that is over 50 years old, but less than 100 years old. Trade standards are not as demanding with the use of this term as they are with the descriptor antique, so ask a seller what they mean when they use it.

Listen to the Right Words

When searching for vintage and antique merchandise through stores or sellers you’re unfamiliar with, be wary of the word choice describing an item. When an item is valuable and authentic, usually its history will be well documented and prominently displayed. However, often a merchant may try to impress you with an item that looks great but isn’t as valuable. Listen to words like ‘influenced,' ‘inspired,' or ‘in the style of,' as these are most likely newer pieces that imitate a specific era, not an item created in that period. Don’t be afraid to leave the store to do your own research before coming back to purchase the item.

Purpose and Placement

Deciding how you want to use an item is an essential part of antique shopping. Consider whether you want art or something for everyday use. If you’re looking for a piece of art, your main concern should be the quality and craft of a piece. Keep an eye out for items you love that fit in with your current display. You may have found your new favorite piece, but does it fit in with the French country home furniture that currently decorates your home?

Looking for items that you want to use on a day to day basis presents a completely different series of problems. The durability of a certain item should be considered, as well as the cost of restoration. Antique and vintage items used on a daily basis will eventually need treatment and care. If the cost of repair is extensive, it’s probably better to forgo the item as useful and present it as decor only.

Care and Maintenance

Knowing how to take care of a vintage piece is essential. If you expose an antique item to certain factors, like sunlight, dust, or cleaning products, you may ruin it forever. Read up on the item you just bought to avoid mistakes.

Love What You Buy

The most important part of shopping for vintage and antique items is ensuring you absolutely love a piece. Sometimes immersion in so many old items makes you consider value before beauty. Sometimes, buying something you adore instead of something that has a large price tag is the bigger investment. Find something to love in the non-traditional, and you’ll ensure a home that speaks to you.

My Simply Be Fall Fashion Wishlist - I Want it All!

Now that fall is in full session; I have been having a hard time not buying up everything I love, especially when it comes to my favorite online sites like Simply Be. It's just too tempting not to snatch up a few fall favorites, but I digress.

Fall happens to be my favorite season not just because it gives me an excuse to eat pumpkin pie, sip on hot chocolate and appreciate the cooler temps, but it also happens to be when my birthday takes place. Oh, and did I mention that fall is also when my boyfriend's, Morkie Candy's, my niece's birthdays all take place too -- and well -- you get the picture. It's a fun time of year for me!

But circling back around to one of my favorite topics -- i.e., clothing -- who doesn't love the changing seasons solely because it's a hobby of mine (and probably yours too) to stock up on new fall ensembles?!

What makes this season even more exciting is shopping. I admit I've already bought a few items for fall and I can't wait to get some more, especially to hold me through the winter. I also can't wait to start planning my outfits for Christmas time -- oooh that sounds like so much fun!

Keeping Safe Whilst Hiking: Simple Tips

Hiking is an exciting outdoor activity that everyone can enjoy. Below are some tips to making sure that your hiking trip goes to plan, and any safety mishaps are avoided.

Prepare beforehand

It is important that you are well prepared for your hike; you should know exactly where you are going to, and take every precaution you can think of to help your hike progress smoothly with no unwanted hiccups. Many hikers go hiking with a partner, particularly if they are planning to complete a long-distance hike. Ensure you have a compass with you, even if you are planning to stick to a marked trail, just in case you get lost. You will need an ample supply of food and water. Check the weather too so know what gear you should be wearing - but remember - the weather can chance unexpectedly, so be prepared for all eventualities. Waterproof matches are a good idea, too, just in case a fire needs to be started.

First-aid kit

A well-stocked first aid kit is an essential piece of kit for every hiker. Keep it stocked with bangades and antiseptic creams to clean up cuts and avoid infection.  If you are unlikely to be able to seek help quickly, make sure you have researched how to dress wounds properly. Most trails have exit paths that lead towards main roads; knowing where the off-routes are is essential in the event that you are injured.

Water

An ample supply of water will include enough water for your hike, as well as some extra water just in case you need it. Experienced hikers often invest in purification systems to save carrying extra weight. Drinking untreated water is never a good idea and could introduce a host of unfamiliar bacteria into your body.

Fire

You will need to know how to make a fire, particularly if you are camping-out; as well as providing warmth, fires also deter wild animals. If you are hurt, fires can also be used to signal your location to others in the vicinity, enabling them to find you.

Dress

Dressing properly will keep you safe; make sure you have rain gear, and are dressed in layers to enable you to adjust your clothing to surrounding temperatures. Wearing hiking shoes will save your feet from blisters and other injuries associated with walking for long periods in inadequate footwear.

Respect your surroundings

Leave everything exactly where it was when you found it; disturbing the land can result in rock or landslides, potentially endangering you and any other people or animals in the vicinity. In the same vein, leave plants and wildlife alone; do not eat any seeds or berries that you find on your path, even if they look familiar. Keep an eye out for warning signs, depending on where you are hiking, some signs may have overgrown or become hidden, but the hazards will still be there. Look out in particular for falling rock signs. You can see all the different types of signs here, courtesy of My Safety Signs. Wild animals may look cute, but do not approach them or endeavour to engage with them; to do so is likely to cause them stress, and put you in danger of being scratched or bitten. Some species carry rabies, making it even more important that you leave them alone.

oceandreams4sierra.gif
If you ever want to see a truly happy dog, simply take them to the beach. You’ll see the pure joy in their faces when they’re frolicking through the surf and playing in the sand. Whether you have a larger, mixed breed animal that likes blasting through the surf or even a little specialty terrier that enjoys chasing everything that scurries or flies through the air, your four-legged friend will have a blast running around on the beach.

With over 800 miles of coastal shorelines to explore, let’s take a look at some of the top off-leash beaches in California where you can let Fido run free:

#1 - Arroyo Burro Beach, Santa Barbara
#2 - Baker Beach, San Francisco
Without leash restrictions at this beautiful beach, you’ll likely see plenty of dogs frolicking and playing in the surf and sand. Ranked as one of California’s top beach towns, there’s plenty to see in this gorgeous small town. Above the beach runs the well-maintained, gravel-lined Scenic Bluff Path that meanders through the shade of the many unique Monterey cypress trees and landscaped gardens that lead to Carmel point.
The locals call this place Hendry’s Beach and it’s a hot spot for meeting with friends and enjoying breakfast or a cocktail at the Boathouse restaurant and bar. Amenities are plentiful at this county park and include surfing, swimming, fishing, restrooms, bird watching, equestrian trails, barbecue grills, picnic tables, and benches. You, your dog and whole family will have a blast at this beach.

Travel Tip: Don’t forget to bring an extra blanket or towel for your pooch, make sure they have a shady space to beat the heat and plenty of drinking water to avoid possible heat stroke.
Here you’ll experience spectacular views of the Golden Gate Beach at this beautiful beach located just a mile south of the iconic bridge. There are restrooms and picnic facilities available here and some visitors have spotted harbor porpoises playing in the surf. Although dogs are allowed off-leash north of the Lobos Creek, south of there they must be on a lead.

Travel Tip: Just because you’re going to the beach, don’t expect it to be sunny and hot in this part of the San Francisco bay area. Mornings are often foggy and chilly, weekends can be crowded with packed parking, so plan accordingly.

Travel Tip: When you take your dog for long walks through the dirt or the spend the day at the beach, be sure to wash them thoroughly afterward to remove sand, dirt, rocks and other debris, especially from their paws.

#4 - Coronado Dog Beach Run, Coronado

Across the bay from San Diego, with a name like Coronado Dog Beach Run, you know that canines are welcome to run amok on this island coastline. Although they’re only allowed off-leash in a certain area on the western part of the beach, it’s a large area that’s well marked by signage. It’s a very scenic area where you can enjoy the view while your dog is playing in the water.

But as long as you keep an eye on your animal and follow the rules, you can have fun in Coronado and these other fantastic beaches where you can take your dog. Instead of leaving them behind when you go to the beach, consider one of these sandy locations when visiting the California coast.

Travel Tip: Be mindful of your mutt, places where they aren’t allowed or where they must be leashed are closely monitored and owners face stiff fines if caught off-guard. Be sure to clean up after your animal, ensure they’re not being aggressive, food and treats aren’t allowed on the beach. All of these things that could end in trouble for you and your canine from local authorities.

·   The dress fabric is practically divided into two major classes; manmade fibers and natural ones. Examples of natural fibers are silk, cotton, hemp, bamboo and other forms of vegetable fibers.
·    Manmade ones are even termed as synthetic fibers. Well, some available options are acrylic, spandex, nylon, polyester, modal, and even rayon.
·   You will come across a wide assortment of manmade and natural fibers for making the perfect cocktail apparel. Well, some materials are better avoided for their rugged or too coarse features.
With this knowledge on cocktail dresses and your body type, choose the one that would best suit you. Remember it is not the dress; it is how gracefully you can carry it off!

My Tahari ASL Daytime Dresses Wishlist

I'm always looking for new clothing to wear because I happen to love keeping up with the latest trends and fashion statements. Even though I work at home doesn't mean I can't appreciate the styles and even wear a few when I go out and visit with friends and family!

Recently I came across Tahari ASL, and if you haven't heard of this brand, they offer effortlessly chic and work appropriate clothing that's stunning. In particular, I love their daytime dresses, which are perfect for me to wear for a summer or fall time outing, paired with a jacket when the weather cools down.

Why don't you check out some of my favorite daytime dresses and let me know what you think!

Textured Scuba Side-Laced Sheath

I love this Textured Scuba Side-Laced Sheath dress because it's simple, classic, and works to wear during a variety of occasions. In particular, I adore the ruched side that’s laced up with brushed golden grommets. I'm a sucker for anything ruched or laced up on the side or top of a blouse, for example. There's something incredibly sexy and romantic about this look.

Watercolor Print Sheath

Another design element and pattern I absolutely love is anything watercolor and this dress not only has a watercolor print, but it comes in my favorite color shades: turquoise and blues! This streamlined watercolor print sheath is definitely something I would wear all season long and living in California; this dress would look perfect anywhere I go!

Drawstring-Waist Crepe Shirtdress

via

I happen to love shirtdresses because they are casual yet very dressy, like this dress. I love the color and style of this Drawstring-Waist Crepe Shirtdress and the drawstring waist and rolled sleeves are two details I really like.

With fall approaching, I can totally see myself wearing this dress with a jean jacket and flip flops. It's a great piece to wear when transitioning into the fall time but still works to wear throughout the autumn months.

Metallic Column Gown

via

The dress above isn't one of Tahari's daytime dresses, but it's absolutely stunning, so I had to include it. If I was single and was going on The Bachelor, the Metallic Column Gown is a dress that would be included in my wardrobe. It's absolutely gorgeous, romantic, and 100% my style. I could go on and on about this romantic dress.

So that's my Tahari ASL wishlist. I love how they offer a variety of fashionable clothing, from suits to dresses, giving you a wide range to select from for work and more. They also have a women's plus separates category, which I love.

If budget wasn't a concern, which dresses would you purchase for the fall time?

How a Watch Can Increase Your Productivity

Every day fills up with small appointments and deadlines that you must meet to stay on top of things. Time can easily slip away, making you late to important social or business meetings—this can spell trouble for both your professional and personal life! There’s one simple solution to staying in control of your day: wearing a watch. Read on to discover how a watch can increase your level of productivity.

Cut Down On the Time It Takes to Get Dressed

Women are notorious for spending a lot of time getting ready to go out. Between applying makeup, choosing an outfit, and making sure you have everything you need ready to go, the minutes fly by, and before you know it, you’re late to your engagement. With a wristwatch, you can glance down and instantly know how much time you have left before you need to be out the door.

Make It to Your Dates On Time

Some people can get annoyed when a date shows up late. Don’t make this mistake! First impressions are very important, and your perfect outfit, conversation, and charm may not be enough to compensate for being late. By wearing a watch, you can constantly monitor your schedule and make the adjustments to right on time—or ideally early—so that your date can start off on the right foot.

Avoid Looking at Your Smart Phone

Most people check the time with their phone. However, constant notifications and messages can distract you from the task on hand. The next thing you know, you’ve been flipping through pictures on Instagram for twenty minutes and wasted a bunch of time. Avoid distracting yourself by wearing a watch. When you want to know the time, you can find out in one look and go right back to getting things done. Your productivity and efficiency will increase as you look at your phone less.

Keep Track of Time Underwater

There’s nothing more relaxing than going to the beach or the pool for a dip and some afternoon tanning. However, when you’re lying there basking in the sun half-asleep, you can easily lose track of time. You can easily ruin the whole afternoon by losing track of time and packing up in a hurry to run to your next social obligation. A watch is the perfect thing to help you keep track of how long you’ve been at the beach and when you need to start heading back. If you spend a lot of time underwater, get your hands on quality diving watches so that you can check the time while you’re still in the water!

Stay on Schedule

It can be easy to lose track of time, get side swept by daydreams, and be late to your next social or business occasion. Instead of constantly disappointing others and running behind on your schedule, let a watch keep you up to task and on time. You’ll be surprised by how efficient and productive you can become simply by staying aware of time. With proper time management, you can also notice extraneous stress melt away. Open your life to new opportunities and newer vistas by wearing a fashionable watch and staying on time.

Top Trends to Expect During Fall and Winter 2016

New York Fashion Week is one of the biggest fashion events of the year. Hundreds of designers and their protégés reveal their newest ideas and biggest surprises in preparation for fall and winter styles.

Taking cues from spring’s February fashion week, there are several trends you can expect to continue throughout the rest of the year. Check out the list of popular trends that you can expect to see during the 2016 fall and winter seasons.

Statement Fur

Fur will be everywhere on the runway—from cross shoulder styles to embellished shirts. However, the real star will be the statement fur. Bold colors, daring prints, and unique designs are extremely popular, and every piece makes for a dazzling ensemble.

Earlier this year, statement fur made a splash on the runway as well. While most coats were favored with the street-style crowd—like Michael Kors’ pink cotton candy coat—there were also a few that aimed for polished refinement. Oscar De La Renta’s sleek burgundy, white, and black creation was a prime example!

Gold and Tinsel

In the past, gold, silver, and other metallic styles belonged strictly to glitzy senior citizens and Las Vegas party girls. However, thanks to the 2016 spring runway, fashion has reclaimed these fabulous metallic colors and tinsel.

This fall, expect to see metallic tinsel embellishments on Alexander McQueen’s breathtaking gowns and Erdem’s feathered and fringed dresses, as well as a colorful metallic shine in every single one of Wolk Moais unisex pieces. These are incredible color statements to include into your fashion-forward outfits!

Renaissance Women

Renaissance designs will flood the runway with corsets and embroidery to Victorian-inspired sleeves and empire waists. Balmain’s new line specifically looks to include corsetry and embroidery in many of the designs. Other designers bring rich brocade and deep colors to the runway, modernizing classic designs with contemporary accessories and shoes.

Turtlenecks and Dresses

Trends that serve as seasonal transitions are always popular on the runway. This year, expect to see summer dresses over autumn shirts and tights. Textured and embroidered tights will be worn under simple, solid color pieces, while busy, patterned dresses will benefit from the soothing effect of a single-color turtleneck.

This style is particularly easy to mimic off the runway; all you need to do is pair your favorite summer dress with a turtleneck or some leggings. Online boutique stores, like The Pink Lily Boutique, provide a variety of seasonal clothes that can be stylized for a number of seasons, depending on the outfit and the accessories. Ultimately, your fashion sense should circle around the idea that seasons could be blended for a stylistic effect.

Ruffles

The runway is where the most over-the-top pieces belong. Since everyone is accustomed to seeing extravagance, adding ruffles to an ensemble can create that extra dramatic effect. This fall and winter season, you can expect to see a profusion of layers and tiers in shirts, dresses, and even jackets. As a close relative of the ruffle, the capelet will also make a surprise appearance.

Ruffles of exaggerated proportions were utilized on the spring runway with a powerful effect. Expect to see Jill Stuart transition her structured, high fashion ruffles from spring to fall by creating asymmetrical lines and utilizing fall floral patterns. This is one style you won’t want to miss!

From the runway to the closet

So many of these runway trends utilize spectacular statement pieces as the main event. To make these items wearable for day-to-day activities, tone down the drama and introduce your fashion sense with flair. Bring your favorite pieces from the New York runway to your closet by combining them with quality basics, like District Clothing tees, tanks, and raglans. By supplementing casual attire with high-fashion, you can ensure that your wardrobe will be on-point and ready to impress, no matter the occasion.

Top 8 Conventional Beauty Routines That Are Slowly Damaging Your Skin

Almost everyone wants to have a clear and healthy-looking skin. Some people buy tons of products to fix their skin issues. There are also people who are willing to undergo drastic and expensive skin treatments just to get back their skin’s natural glow. While most of these beauty routines give out good results, they are actually damaging your skin in the long run.

If you are unsure about how safe your routine is, take a look at the list below and see for yourself which skin care mistake you’re guilty of doing.

1. Slapping on your face cream

Most people, particularly those who are on the rush, tend to apply their face creams and moisturizers by slapping them on the skin or rubbing them vigorously. If this sound exactly like you, then it’s probably high time you reconsider changing your beauty routine. Slapping creams on your face won’t get the product into your skin’s deeper layers. It will just make them sit on the surface and unable to do their work.

So, instead of slapping, apply your face cream from your neck up using gentle upward strokes. Try to use minimal pressure as you spread the product evenly.

2. Using face wipes

Face wipes may give you a refreshing feel, but they aren’t the best for your skin. Aside from that most of them contain harsh chemicals and even alcohol, the dragging and pulling motion you do to clean your face create minute tears on your skin. They can also cause irritation, redness, and excessive dryness.

3. Using anti-aging products too early

Most women want to limit or prevent the signs of skin aging as much and as early as possible. This is one of the reasons why they choose to start early with anti-aging products. Although understandable, the problem with using these products, particularly the really potent ones, too early is that they cause thinning of the skin. This makes your skin even more prone to sun damage.

4. Wrong hair removal technique

Shaving can surely help you get flawless skin but its effect isn’t that long lasting. Technically, you’ll have to shave once or every other day just to remain hair-free. Aside from this inconvenience, shaving can also result to ingrown hair, nicks, and cuts which can negatively impact the integrity of your skin.

Instead of investing your money on razors and shaving creams, it’s a much better idea if you can get yourself the best epilator. Epilation is more efficient and safe than shaving and waxing. It can also give you a longer lasting result without the mess and irritation. Before heading out to purchase one, make sure to read epilator reviews first so you can have an idea of how much they cost and what features you should look out for.

5. Exfoliating daily

Exfoliation is an essential part of any skin care routine. It helps get rid of the dead skin cells that are making you look dull and unhealthy. However, exfoliation on a daily basis isn’t really recommended as it can take away your skin’s natural oil and moisture.

For its best effect, try to limit your exfoliation to once or twice a week. Choose chemical exfoliation instead of using scrubbing pads and loofahs as they can be abrasive for your skin. There are chemical gel peels available today that work by dissolving your skin’s outermost layer. Because these gel peels don’t penetrate deep into your skin, there’s a lesser chance for irritation to occur.

6. Not waiting for your serums to dry completely

Proper layering of products is critical if you want to make sure they work properly. Applying products after products without waiting for them to dry can cause dilution and unnecessary mixing. In some cases, it can even cause a negative interaction between the products and you become at risk of several adverse reactions.

Instead of hurrying up the process, take the time to completely allow each product to dry before proceeding with the next one. Cleanse your face and pat it dry before using your toner. Once it has dried up, you can apply your serum and then your moisturizer. If you are using any sunblock, which you should be, use it after your moisturizer gets completely absorbed by your skin.

7. Using too much moisturizer

You don’t really need to use a lot of moisturizers to increase its effectiveness. The truth is your skin doesn’t need tons of products to stay supple and hydrated. You only need a small amount of the right type of moisturizer to do the trick. Find one that suits your skin type best and carefully assess its ingredients to see if it has the components that can address your skin issues. Aside from the ingredients and your skin type, you should also consider the moisturizer’s formulation as it can make or break your skin.

Too much moisturizer can lead to a lot of skin issues. It can cause clogged pores, blackheads and accumulated layers of dead skin cells. Over time, this habit can make your skin stop producing its natural oils and become dependent on the products you apply.

8. Switching products frequently

There are no skin care products that can miraculously get rid of your acne or scars overnight. You have to give them enough time to do their job. Typically, it can take a few months before you can see any drastic changes in your skin. If you fail to see any improvements after three months, then you can safely switch to another skin care item.

One key thing to remember about trying out new products is that you shouldn’t use more than one item at the same time. Trying out multiple items at once will make it hard for you to determine which products are actually working and which ones aren’t. Use the same rule as mentioned above and give each product enough time before switching to the next one.

Choose the Perfect Ankle Boots Every Time

When it comes to creating the perfect outfit, footwear is important. Your choice of shoes or boots makes a huge difference to whether your overall look works or not. If you think about it, you will know what I mean. How many times have you seen an elegantly dressed woman spoil everything by wearing footwear that is too heavy for her outfit? I know I have seen it, or something similar, quite a few times, and suspect you have too.

One of the most common mistakes I see is people wearing the wrong type of ankle boot. As a result, I thought a post to guide you through choosing the right style for your outfit might be a good idea.

Ankle boots and dresses

OK, first let’s deal with the elephant in the room. Can you wear ankle boots with a dress? Well, my answer is yes, but you do need to be careful.

In this situation, it is especially important to choose the right style of the dress or skirt. You also need to make sure that your boots will be seen as appropriate for the occasion.

For example, if you are wearing a sophisticated, tailored dress or skirt suit, a pair of close fitting, fine leather ankle boots with a low stiletto could actually work. But, this style of boots would not look good paired with a floaty, light summer dress.

This picture of K.T Tunstall is a great example of how to wow with ankle boots and a skirt. When you are trying to pair this type of footwear with a dress, you just need to be careful.

By far the best way to find out what works for you is to go shopping in your lunch hour to try on a few and see what looks good with your work outfits. Some boots finish at the ankle, others an inch or so above. You will be surprised what a difference an inch or two makes to the overall look, so try all options.

Ankle boots and trousers

Where ankle boots come into their own is when you want to wear jeans or trousers. In that situation, they pretty much always look great. However, you still need to be a bit careful about which style you buy. If you are wearing jeans you can generally get away with the more masculine styles. For example, heavy sole boots. But, be careful because these would not look right with a pair of trousers made from a lighter fabric.

Must have ankle boots for your wardrobe

As you can see for the most parts ankle boots are a versatile style of footwear. They are comfortable, generally well made and nowhere near as expensive as full-length boots, so they have a lot going for them. I would even go as far to say that they are a wardrobe must haves.

When it comes to styling black ankle boots are the best, they are extremely versatile, and will go with many different outfits. Therefore, if you are on a tight budget, and can only afford one pair my advice would be to buy a black pair.
